To a lot of sports fans, a win is a win, but for the Apple Bowl faithful cheering on the Sun to a second straight home victory, this one was an ugly win…with a couple of very good-looking highlights.
Even though the Sun amassed 265 net offensive yards in the first half, there were plenty of missed opportunities on both sides of the ball and more flags than the United Nations Plaza. Discipline was certainly not a Sun strength on Saturday night.
The game started with one of those “good-looking” highlights when DB Vicente Ferreira took the opening kickoff 56 yards into Kodiak territory. Quarterback Marcus Christos, getting his second straight start for the injured Liam Kroeger, marched the offence down to the seven-yard line, where first-year RB Jaxon Allan fumbled.
Allan would more than make up for the one that got away, turning in a breakout performance in just his fourth game with the Sun.
The first-year running back finished with 18 touches for 221 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding one reception for 17 yards.
Despite a ho-hum first quarter from Christos, the quarterback found his stride late in the second frame.
Trailing Prince George 13–11, the Sun took the lead for good when Allan scored on a six-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, to make it 18–13 Sun.
On the ensuing Kodiaks possession, DB Teshaine Peach picked off quarterback Toby Plett, giving the Sun the ball at the PG 31.
With under two minutes to play in the half and five plays later, Christos scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper to give the Sun a 25–13 lead.
The Sun were able to get the ball back with under a minute remaining and, with just 12 seconds on the clock, Christos found receiver Noah Borhot in the end zone to give the Sun a 32–13 lead heading into halftime.
The scoring machine continued to roll through the third quarter, with the Sun adding four unanswered touchdowns.
Christos hooked up with receiver Ty Craver on a 49-yard pass-and-run for six, then scored his second rushing touchdown of the game before Allan added his third and fourth touchdowns of the night on 15 and two-yard runs to give the Sun a 60–13 lead after three quarters.
Christos closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 26-yard touchdown run, his third rushing TD of the game, to make it a 67–13 final.
The Sun finished with 505 yards of net offence, including 347 yards rushing and 158 through the air.
Second place in the BCFC will be on the line when the 3–1 Sun hit the road this Saturday, August 22, travelling to Vancouver Island to face the 3–1 Westshore Rebels in Langford.
