Okanagan Sun lay 67 on Prince George Saturday

To hear Okanagan Sun head coach Travis Miller tell it, “that was the ugliest 67 point win I have ever seen.”

And it was hard to argue with him.

Fumbles, missed assignments, shoddy play on both sides of the ball, and numerous untimely and uncalled for penalties littered much of the opening half of what eventually turned into a 67-13 shellacking of the visiting Prince George Kodiaks.

But, if you were airlifted into the Apple Bowl with no preconceived idea of who was who, you might have thought for a moment it was the Kodiaks, and not the Sun, who had national championship aspirations.

The Kodiaks, who had scored just three points in games against opposition other than the Kamloops Broncos, held a 13-11 lead over the Sun five minutes into the second quarter and were full value for that lead.

It could have been more had the Sun defence not held firm deep inside their own end, holding the Kodiaks to a pair of short field goals instead of touchdowns.

“We didn’t execute at all,” understated Miller.

“We had a short week of practice like with Langley and it proves that we’re not that mentally checked in when we don’t have the same consistency.

“You get into the motion, the consistency of practice. That’s why we are consistently good because we have the consistency of practice and when we don’t have that, we’re off.”

Miller was referring to a lack of practice time leading up to the game due to the thick smoke early in the week.

Once they “checked in” they dominated, scoring on their last two possessions of the second quarter and their first four possessions of the third.

“It was definitely an execution thing later on when the guys finally caught fire and I think our running game, Jaxon had what, 200 yards and four touchdowns?

“When a kid takes over like that you can’t thank him enough to calm the waters.”

Allan finished the night with 235 yards and those four touchdowns while quarterback Marcus Christos, while not as sharp as a week ago, still accounted for the other five (two passing and three on the ground).

Trailing by two, Allan ran in his second of the night from six yards out midway through the second to put the Sun ahead 18-13, a lead they would never relinquish.

Following a Teshaine Peach interception, Christos needed just five plays to get to the end zone, capping the drive off with his own one yard plunge.

On his next possession, Christos found Noah Borhot with an 11 yard strike to cap off an eight play, 51-yard drive.

If the Sun hadn’t finally taken the game over leading 32-13 at the half, they grabbed it by the throat in the third, scoring four unanswered touchdowns.

Christos ran one in from three yards out, hit Tyler Craver for a 49 yard touchdown on a simple swing pass, and Allan finished off his night with touchdown runs of 15 and six yards.

Christos capped off the scoring with a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Despite the lopsided win, the Sun will have to clean some things up ahead of their showdown in Victoria next weekend.

The secondary, which was torched for four long pass plays including a 52-yard touchdown, will have to tighten up and the penalties will have to be addressed.

The Sun did finish the night with nearly 500 yards of total offence, including 351 yards on the ground.

The Kodiaks used those four big plays to finish the night with 202 passing yards, but were held to minus six on the ground.

The Sun, now 3-1, travel to the island next weekend to face the 3-1 Westshore Rebels.
