OKANAGAN SUN HOSTS VI RAIDERS IN HOME OPENER SATURDAY JULY 26
One game does not make a juggernaut.
But, based on how handily the Okanagan Sun dismantled the Langley Rams in their season opener last weekend, there could be one in the making.
The Sun ran roughshod over the Rams in all three phases, amassing 400 yards in total offence while at the same time holding the Rams to barely 100.
And the defensive line, described by head coach Travis Miller as the heartbeat of the defence, were in the offensive backfield all night.
Led by defensive player of the week JaQuintis Summers’ three quarterback sacks, the front seven created havoc in the offensive backfield all night long.
Couple that with a balanced offence that ran for 106 yards and threw for 303 more, and the Sun were full value for a 39-0 season opening triumph.
The opposition gets a little tougher for the Sun this weekend when they host the VI Raiders in Saturday’s home opener at the Apple Bowl.
The Raiders were equally as dominant, securing a 50-7 win in Kamloops in their opener a week ago.
They were led by a ball-hawking secondary that intercepted four Kamloops passes, three by Israel Waitman who took one back for a touchdown.
In all, the Raiders forced eight turnovers.
On offence, the Sun will have to deal with running back Rhonde Lyle and the arm of Brayden Jupe.
Lyle rambled for 106 yards against the Broncos while Jupe completed 16 of 23 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns.
This is far from the team that won just four of 20 games over the past two seasons.
It should be a good early season test for both teams.
Kickoff Saturday night is set for 7 p.m.
Fans heading to the game Saturday should note the entrance to the Apple Bowl off Burtch is a little cramped as part of the area around the parking lot is being utilized by crews working on construction of the new Parkinson Rec Centre and ripping up of the sports fields.
The Sun will have parking attendants staged at the front entrance and others directing vehicles into parking stalls.
