OKANAGAN SUN BUST THE BRONCOS IN A 70 – 3 ANNIHILATION
Story Courtesy Eric Stansfield
Last nights match-up between the BCFC leading Okanagan Sun and the Kamloops Broncos was a perfect example of two teams with the “haves” and the “have-nots.”
The Sun, at 5 and 0 is an organization with all the “haves” and more…whereas the Broncos, at 0 and 5 are desperately struggling to find any hint of a putting a win together.
Seizing on the moment, the Sun played pretty much their entire roster in the 70-3 destruction of Kamloops, moving to 6 and 0 for the start of the second half of the schedule.
The Sun utilized four quarterbacks, with Liam Kroeger and Marcus Christos carrying the bulk of the game and eleven different receivers saw the football, chipping in 5 touchdowns, while RB Gerren Hardisty was once again the workhorse in the backfield with 16 carries for 142-yards and 2 TD’s. Hardisty remains ranked number one in BCFC Rushing with 792 yards and tied for first in touchdowns scored with 8.
The game started in typical Sun fashion, driving the ball downfield deep into the Broncos end on their first two possessions, however two turnovers inside Kamloops five-yard line, followed by two solid defensive stands, gave the Sun two safeties and four points early in the first quarter.
After the safeties, the Sun buckled down and went to work. First quarter touchdowns from Hardisty, his first of three on night, and R Jordayne Falconer showing off his speed with a thrilling 58-yard punt return for six, it was 18 – 0 Sun after one quarter.
With their foot on the gas, the Sun continued to roll along in the second quarter, with the Falconer and Hardisty show. Falconer scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run and then Kroeger made it three for the fleet footed receiver on a 34-yard strike. Hardisty closed out the first half scoring on a 21-yard run…39 – 0 Sun at the half.
The third quarter opened with Hardisty picking up his third TD of the game, 46 – 0 Sun, and it was time for the starters to find the bench and enjoy a well-deserved rest.
Number two quarterback Christos, who has been the short-yardage engineer all season, went to work and work he did, leading the Sun offence with three touchdown passes…45-yards to Ty Walker, 12-yards to rookie Parker Scott, and 34-yards to Ethan Bilo…67 – 0 Sun early fourth quarter.
Sun kicker Liam Attwood added a 28-yard field goal, along with his 9 converts on the night, giving him a league leading 49 points scored on the season…Hardisty is ranked second with 48 points.
The Broncos broke the goose egg with a 23-yard field goal with 15 ticks left on the clock.
For the second game in a row, the Sun rolled up over 500 yards of net offense…511 yds last week vs Valley Huskers and 549 yds vs the Broncos for a two-game total of 1,060 yards.
Kroeger was 14 of 19 for 241 yds, 2 TD’s, 1 interception, Christos was 6 of 7 for 102 yds, 3 TD’s, total yards passing was 385. Number 3 and 4 on the Sun quarterback depth-chart Liam Connolly and Declan Lyth both saw limited action in the fourth quarter.
The Sun will take to the road next Saturday, Sept. 6th, with a northernly drive to Prince George to face the third place Kodiaks.
