The Sun fall for the third straight game

Turnovers and untimely penalties led to a third straight loss for the Sun on Saturday afternoon, falling 14-8 in Nanaimo to the host VI Raiders.

The offence sputtered against the Raiders defence, not scoring a touchdown until the fourth quarter when quarterback Keith Zyla ran it in.  It was the first touchdown in eight quarters for the offence.  Zyla finished 2 of 7 for 22 yards coming off the bench.  Foster Martens started the game and completed 10 of 19 for 133 yards.  Rashaun Simonise made five receptions for 85 yards.

On the ground Brendan Hansen carried the rock 11 times for 63 yards on a rain soaked field.

Over on the defence, Cory McCoy was a force with four sacks and three solo tackles.   Jonas Gering also had a sack and five solo tackles, while Jamie Turek picked off a pass.

The Sun were penalized an incredible 32 times, setting a new team record.  The old mark was 30 which was set in Week 2 in Kamloops.

With the Sun loss and a Westshore Rebels win, the Rebels clinched first place and home field advantage throughout the Canadian Bowl playoffs.   The Rebels beat the Rams on Saturday dropping them into a second place tie with the Sun.  Next Sunday the Sun host the Rams, the winner will finish second and host the other in the Canadian Bowl quarterfinal two weeks later.  Sunday’s kick-off is set for 1:00pm.
