The Sun open training camp next week and one of the positions with possibly the most openings is at defensive back following the graduation of Brennan Van Nistelrooy and Wes Geisler along with the departure to CIS by Cord Delinte.

That said with three major pieces returning, defensive backs should be very deep again in 2016 with 12 players attending main camp.

Jamie Turek

The Winnipeg native returns for his fifth and final season and could be a duel threat.  Last year in the secondary he made 15 tackles, blocked a kick, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass.   He will not only bring experience, but will be looked upon as a leader.  Turek can also run back kicks.  Last season he returned 12 punts for 225 yards, averaging 18.8 yards a return. He also ran a punt back 85 yards for the major.

Beck Fullerton

He’s another veteran presence on the backend who will help fill the hole left by the CFL drafted Van Nistelrooy.   Fullerton has all the tools to be an All-Canadian as he enters his fourth year.  Last season the Winnipeg native compiled 17 tackles, four knockdowns, had two fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions.

Raquille Cespedes

Just a rookie last season but he showed flashes of what the near future has in store when he hits field more often in 2016.  He tallied nine tackles, had a knockdown and scored two touchdowns; one on a 48 yard pick six and 16 yard fumble recovery.  When Cespedes (pictured) gets into the open field, with his tremendous speed he’s difficult to catch.

Ty Kitzman

A Vernon product who was on the extended roster last season will look to make a bigger impact this season with the club.

Patrick Kyle

The RSS product will be in tough during main camp this season, after taking a year off in 2015.  Kyle will need to have a very good camp to overlook his year off last season.

Mitchel Walz

Walz is a local player following his graduation at RSS as a quarterback.   The Voodoos started the season 2-0 last year and Walz had a big hand in the hot start.  Despite his offensive skills, Walz will showcase his abilities on the backend and will look to win a spot at the defensive back position.

Kaden Collins

Another young player with a tremendous upside out of Calgary and the Henry Wise Wood program comes west.

Trey Adams

A Springbank Alberta graduate comes highly scouted and will challenge for a roster spot immediately after competing against some of the best talent in Calgary.

Dustin Magee

The Foothills Falcons (7-2) won the Tier 2 Alberta Provincial title this past season and defence was a major reason.  Magee was a key cog all year, making four tackles in the championship game against a previously undefeated team.  Thanks to Magee and the Falcons secondary they held their opponent to 141 yards of passing in the finale.

Connor Johnstone

He was on the Sun extended roster last season and should compete for a regular roster spot this season out of Grande Prairie.

Cole Stregger

He was part of a very good KSS Owls defence last year that finished 4-2 in the regular season.  Stregger collected 19 stops and forced a fumble last last.  The Owls fell in the quarterfinal after winning their first playoff game by 20 points over Argyle.

Tyson Mastrodimos

His Sexsmith Sabres finished 7-2 and on top of the Tier 5 Football Alberta standings in the regular season a year ago.   After Mastrodimos’ squad blasted Vermilion in the semis, they suffered a heartbreaker in the regional final to conclude their season.  Mastrodimos knows how to win and will fight for a roster spot with the Sun.

Main Camp opens this Thursday, click HERE for the schedule.  The Sun will open the 2016 season on July 23rd in Chilliwack against the new look Valley Huskers.
