Linebacker Keagan Hughes will play at the CIS level in 2016

Another member of the Sun defence will take the next step in his football career and play at the CIS level.

Linebacker Keagan Hughes played a crucial role in the dominating defence of the Sun in 2015 and emerged as one of the leaders.   He led the club with 87.5 defensive points on 33 tackles, six assisted stops, half a sack, two blocked kicks, two knockdowns and one forced fumble.

In what would be Hughes final junior football game, the 2015 Canadian Bowl, he was simply outstanding.  He tallied a game high nine solo tackles, and assisted on eight others.  As a matter of fact, in the three Sun playoff games in 2015, the Mt Boucherie grad led the way with 19 solo tackles.

Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke Quebec certainly took notice and made Hughes an offer he could not resist.  “This fall I have decided to play the game I love at the next level and sign with Bishop’s University in Quebec.  Bishops really has everything I have been waiting to find in a university.  They have a small campus in a close knit community. They offer a great combination of football and academics. When Bishops invited me for a visit, and I got to know the other player and coaching staff. They are a great group of guys with a ton of talent. I couldn’t resist their offer. I’m excited to spend my next 5 years playing in Quebec and earning my degree in Sports Studies.”

Hughes not only excelled on the field in 2015, but was also the first to volunteer for team community events.  Whether he was dancing at the Pregnant and Fabulous Family Fair or helping kids meet Santa Claus at the Downtown Kelowna Light Up, Hughes was there.

He will be missed on and off the field for the orange and brown, but we are certain he was look just as nice in the purple of Bishop’s.

The Sun will open their 2016 Spring Camp May 13-15, 2016.
