The Sun pounded the Westshore Rebels on Saturday night 78-7 to open the new season.

Here are "five takeaways" from the Sun radio network broadcast booth with Ryan Watters:

1) Jonas Gering back!  After missing six games last season and recording five sacks prior to his injury, Jonas looked great on Saturday.  His was quick off the block and for the most part overpowered the Rebels offensive line.  He tallied two tackles and two sacks.  He is one of the defensive captains and he showed why leading the Sun defence.

2) Josiah Joseph likes playing the Rebels.  Saturday night the Mt Boucherie grad finished 7 of 7 for 155 yards and a touchdown.   In two career games against the Rebels Joseph is 14 of 14 for 296 yards and has thrown four touchdown passes without an interception.

3) Deep O-Line.  With All-Canadian Cliff Crews and veteran Wes Furhmann on the shelf in Week 1, the offensive line didn’t miss a beat as Chase Quewezance and Ryan Wengelinski made their first career starts.  They were able to give all three quarterbacks plenty of time to look down field and blew open holes for the run game.  The Sun rushed for 260 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

4) The search continues.   A replacement for Robbie Yochim returning punts will still need to be determined.  Granted the punt returners didn’t get many opportunities to actually receive a punt, but three players were used.  Jamie Turek, Cole Brydges and Shamar Donelson each lined up, but combined they only managed to receive two punts out of the six attempted kicks by the Rebels.

5) No Haka, no problem.  After the graduation of Manu Eli the Sun pregame looked a little different on Saturday.  Over the last three seasons Eli led his team in the Haka chant prior to kick-off which energized his teammates and the crowd.  This past weekend Dillon Fortune was the centre of attention as he pumped up his teammates in a pregame huddle.

BONUS – The new Sun mascot Spike looked GREAT!  Thankfully running out of the tunnel for the first time, Spike showed a great sense of balance by saving himself from a very embarrassing entrance; tripping and landing on the Sun flag would not have been ideal!  Great save Spike, welcome to the Sun Family!
