On Saturday October 17, 2009 Steven Doege put the BCFC and CJFL on notice that he had arrived in the League.

It was the final game of the regular campaign in Doege’s rookie season as the Sun travelled to South Surrey for a date with the Big Kahuna Rams.  With a win the Sun would finish 6-4 and wrap up the fourth and final playoff spot.

After the Rams jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the Sun defence took over and allowed just six points the rest of the game.   Doege was the leader.

The RSS grad was constantly in the face of the quarterback combination of Cam Clark and Marc Paquette.  He finished with an unbelievable five sacks displaying his tremendous speed off the outside edge.  His performance tied a Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) record in the process.  It was the first time in eight seasons that a player had tallied five sacks. It tied him with Adrian McKenzie of the Richmond Raiders in 1990 and Jim LaPointe who played for the Sun in 2001.

Those five sacks helped Doege collect nine in his rookie year.  He finished his junior career with 43.5 sacks over his four seasons setting a CJFL record that still stands today.

In 2009 Doege was named the team’s Top Rookie and a BCFC All-Star.
