The calendar has turned and the Sun is about to set on the regular season.

On Sunday the Sun (8-1) will host the Kamloops Broncos (6-3) in the regular season finale at the Apple Bowl, with kick-off at 1:00pm.

The Sun have already clinched home field advantage and top spot in the BCFC and are on a seven game winning streak.  It’s the 18th time the Sun have finished first.  The Broncos have also clinched a playoff spot and are fighting for a home date. So there is plenty on the line.

Back in Week 5 the Sun clobbered the Broncos 54-16 behind 333 yards on the ground.  Dillon Fortune led the charge with nine carries for 123 yards.  The Sun scored five touchdowns on the ground at Hillside Stadium, Kasey Russell scoring twice.

Defensively the Sun were again solid, allowing 295 yards of total offense, 61 of which was on the ground.  They also created six turnovers, including three interceptions.  The 295 yards is the Broncos season low.

This Sunday will be the 15th meeting all-time between the Sun and Broncos, and seventh at the Apple Bowl.  The Sun are a perfect 14-0 all-time and 6-0 at home against their Interior rival.  They are averaging 49 points having outscored them 294-69 in the previous six home games.  As a matter of fact, in their last meeting at the Apple Bowl (2013), the Sun claimed a 51-0 victory.

This weekend the Sun will no doubt use the run game to set the tone for the game.  Alex Bradley and Fortune at 1-2 in the Conference combining for 137 carries, 1,200 yards and nine touchdowns.  They have benefitted from the great work of the offensive line who have worked tirelessly this season and it shows.  The run game has scored 26 touchdowns compared to 14 through the air.

In total the Sun offense has scored a Conference high 396 points.  Kicker/Receiver Thomas Huber is second in Conference scoring with 80 points.  Russell leads with a Conference high seven rushing touchdowns.

The Broncos defense have given up 268 points this season and have allowed over 40 points five times.  They’ve also allowed 1,635 yards on the ground and will have their hands full again this weekend with the Sun.

On the flip side, the Sun defense has been dominating.  They have yet to give up 100 yards on the ground against any opponent this year and have allowed a Conference low 120 points.

They are a +32 in takeaways/giveaways and lead the Conference with 20 interceptions.  The Broncos are a -1, throwing 14 picks.  Robbie Yochim leads the club with four interceptions while Dexter Janke and Beck Fullerton each have three.

The Broncos offense has put up some big numbers this season, scoring 276 points, an average of 31 points per game.  They are averaging 439.3 yards of total offense including over 530 yards three times.  Quarterback Steve Schuweiler is completing 54.8% of his passes and has thrown 2,076 yards and 15 touchdowns.

One of Schuweiler’s biggest threats is receiver Derek Yachison who earlier this week began practicing with the BC Lions and will continue to do so until the end of the season.

It will be an entertaining game on Sunday.  If the Sun win, it’ll be there ninth win of the year, matching the total in 2010, which was also last time the BC Championship game was held at the Apple Bowl.  If the Broncos win and the Rams lose, the Broncos will clinch a home playoff game, the first in their franchise history.    Kick-off is at 1:00pm.
