The Sun celebrate a 31-10 win over Rams

The Sun got payback on Saturday night clubbing the Langley Rams 31-10 in front of a ruckus crowd at the Apple Bowl.

It was the Rams who beat the Sun in Week 2, 33-20 the only blemish on their 5-1 record.

Saturday night wasn’t the prettiest offensive games with just 128 yards on the ground and 65 through the air.   So it was up to the Sun defense and special teams to perform, and that they did.

The game didn’t start the way the Sun had hoped, as Dillon Fortune had the ball ripped from his hands on the first play from scrimmage by linebacker Ethan Schulz, who then ran the other way 25 yards for a major.

Seven minutes later the Sun special teams responded, as Robbie Yochim returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown, tying the game.  It was Yochim’s first return for a touchdown this season.

Then as time was running out on the first quarter, Brennan Van Nistelrooy took a fake punt 40 yards to the end zone to give the Sun the lead for good.

In the second quarter Thomas Huber connected on a 12 yard field goal set up by a Dexter Janke interception return down to the two yard line.

Three minutes later Janke picked off another pass, setting the Sun offense up deep inside Rams territory.  From there, quarterback Cam Bedore threw his eighth touchdown pass of the season, a seven yarder to Leone Robinson.

The Sun weren’t done there as Kasey Russell powered his way into the end zone for the fifth time this season on a two yard plunge.  Oddly enough it was the longest run for Russell this season.  His other four touchdowns came from just a yard out.

At the half the Sun led 31-7.  Both teams made adjustments and both defenses played outstanding.

The only points of the second half came from the foot of Rams kicker Steve Thomas connecting on a 31 yarder in the third quarter.

Both defenses pitched a shutout in the final quarter.

The Sun defense was solid, giving up just 44 yards on the ground and 152 through the air, most of which was in the second half.  The “D” created seven Ram turnovers; five interceptions and two turnovers on downs.  Janke recorded a pair of interceptions, JT Fernandez, Yochim and Van Nistelrooy had the others.

With the victory the Sun move into sole possession of first place as 5-1, while the Rams drop to 4-2 and second place.

The Sun play their final road game of the season next Saturday as the club travels to Vancouver Island to face the Raiders for the third time this year.  Kickoff is set for 2:00pm.
