A first place showdown between the Sun and Rams

You know what they say about payback?!  The Sun are hoping for some payback on Saturday night when they welcome in the Langley Rams at 7:00pm.

In Week 2, the Rams beat the Sun 33-20 in Langley holding the passing game to just 76 yards.

Saturday night will be a battle for first place.  Through the first five games of the season, both teams are 4-1.  The Rams have scored the most points in the BCFC (266), while the Sun have allowed the fewest (76) and are coming off a bye.

The Rams have scored over 70 points twice this season, against Kamloops and Westshore.

The Sun defense has been stellar this season and are working as a team swarming the ball.  The front seven don’t allow a lot of yards on the ground, allowing an average of 61 yards in the first half of the season.

Saturday night the Sun secondary will be tested again as the Rams like to throw and have some large, lengthy targets to throw to.  Rams quarterback Dylan Tucker has connected on a Conference high 14 touchdowns.  Malcolm Williams is 6’3 and has a Conference high five touchdowns, Dan English is also 6’3 with four touchdown receptions and Tore Corrado is only 6’0 but has blazing speed and he showed to the Sun in Week 2.  He caught five passes for 137 yards and sprinted for a 61 yard major.

Another area the Sun will have to be concerned about is on special teams.  The Rams’ John Beckerleg has set a new Canadian Junior Football League record with four kick-off returns for a touchdown and will remind Sun fans of Nick Downey, a former Ram, who torched teams on punt and kick-off returns.

In total the Rams have returned six kicks for touchdowns this season.  Beckerleg has five of them.  In Week 2, the Sun held him to three returns for 25 yards.

These two teams are very even on paper. Both have threats offensively, both great defenses and both can throw a wrinkled on special teams.

The one category the Sun and Rams are not even, is in the penalty category.  The Rams are the most penalized team in the Conference, collecting 24 flags last weekend alone for 185 yards.  In the Week 2 match-up the Sun and Rams combined for 32 penalties for 291 yards.

The Sun should be the more rested team after the bye week with the Rams hosting the Broncos last Sunday.  The Sun have never played the Rams following a bye and are 2-3 following Labour Day.

Kick-off at the Apple Bowl is set for 7:00pm.  Catch the live play by play beginning with the Kick-Off Show at 6:30pm with Ryan Watters (@ryan2tswatters) on AM 1150 and across the Sun Football Network.
