Sun Drag Down Raiders In Nanaimo

First victory in Nanaimo since 2005

It was complete domination on Saturday as the Sun won their first game in Nanaimo since 2005 with a 64-20 victory over the Vancouver Island Raiders.

It was the Raiders who scored first at 11:47 of the first quarter with a 32 yard touchdown, their first points against the Sun this season.

From there, the Sun scored 29 unanswered points highlighted by a 76 yard touchdown pass from Cam Bedore to Kyle Patchell.  Bedore also hit Lerone Robinson for a 32 yard score and Patchell a second time from 22 yards out with 33 seconds to go in the second quarter.

Makail Maloff scored his first of two touchdowns in the second quarter, pounding it in from a yard out.  Maloff played the Raiders last season.

The offense continued to pour on the points in the third quarter, scoring 21 points.  Dillon Fortune scored from four yards out, Patchell caught his third touchdown pass from Bedore and Maloff scored his second touchdown, set up by a 90 yard run by Fortune.

In the fourth Patchell scored his fourth touchdown, collecting a Kory Nagata fumble at the two yard line and dove into the end zone.

Bedore had his best game as a junior completing 18 of 24 for 351 yards and four touchdowns.  His favourite target was Patchell who caught eight passes for 219 yards and three majors.

In total the Sun offense tallied 694 yards, 296 of which was on the ground. Fortune carried six times for 126 yards and a score.

Defensively the Sun collected four sacks (Ironstand, Gering, Delinte and Van Nistelrooy) and held the Raiders to 47 yards on the ground.

With one punt return on Saturday, Robbie Yochim set a new BCFC record for most punt returns in a career, surpassing Nick Downey of the Langley Rams with his 132nd.

In the first two meetings between these two teams, the Sun has outscored the Raiders 102-20.  They will meet again on Saturday September 13 in Nanaimo.

The Sun (3-1) will stay on the road on Saturday and travel to Kamloops to face the Broncos (3-0) at 7:00pm at Hillside Stadium.
