Cam Bedore returns as the #1 quarterback for the Sun

When the Sun open the season on Saturday in Chilliwack a familiar face will be calling the signals for the offense.

Cam Bedore is back as the #1 quarterback, after being thrust into that position in 2012 as a rookie.  Last season he had a chance to learn the position at the junior level, backing up Theo Deezar and learned some valuable lessons.

In 2012, Bedore from the WJ Mouat program in Abbotsford became the starter for head coach Gavin Lake.  Bedore didn’t have the experience nor protection he needed to succeed in the Canadian Junior Football League.  As a result he was beat up and knocked down more than any other QB in the Conference.

“I definitely thought I would be a guy holding a clip board for most of that year,” says Bedore.  “It didn’t work out that way, I kind of got thrown to the wolves there is an immense amount of pressure, but I think I handled it pretty well that year.  I learned a lot from older guys like Bobby Davis especially who played the position for so long and Nat Nagy (OC) was a huge influence on me as well.”

Bedore completed 120 of 249 passes for 2,047 yards and threw 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 2012.  His completion percentage was 48.2% and had a passer efficiency rating of 71.8%.

Fast forward ahead to last year and Bedore finally received the coaching he needed as well as the time to watch and learn with Deezar as the starter.

“Coach Beatty definitely played a huge role in my learning in the last couple of years,” continues Bedore. “He introduced me to the weight room (laughs) which was a big thing for me, I put on quite a bit of weight, hopefully that’s going to help me this season.  Again Coach Nagy and Coach Lindsay, especially Coach Lindsay and I have developed a good relationship I think and he’s been around for so long in this league that he sees things that most guys wouldn’t see so he’s been a huge influence on me.”

In 2013 Bedore saw limited action completing 26 of 53 passes for 292 yards and threw four touchdowns.  His pass efficiency rating was 83.2%.

Now in his third year and back as the #1 quarterback Bedore has the motivation and fire to take this team back to the top of the BCFC.  A place the Sun have not been since 2004, and with the extra incentive of the Canadian Bowl being hosted in BC, Bedore is licking his chops to get on the field and put 2012 far behind him.

Hear the complete interview with Bedore during the Kickoff Show on Saturday night as the Sun open the season in Chilliwack against the Valley Huskers.  Kickoff at 7pm.  Listen to the game on AM 1150 starting with the Kickoff Show at 6:30pm with Ryan Watters (@ryan2tswatters).
